John A. (Al) Giesbrecht

Al served with the RCMP for 25 years retiring in 1998.  While serving in the RCMP he was attached to several different sections including Uniform Patrol, Drug Enforcement, Criminal Intelligence and Commercial Crime.  In 1994/95 he completed a U.N. tour in the former Yugoslavia as part of the UN Civilian Police, United Nations Protective Force.

As part of continuing education with the RCMP he completed my Certified General Accounting designation.

After retiring from the RCMP he was employed with the Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch, Ministry of Attorney General, Province of British Columbia.  He held several appointments with the Gaming Branch.  Director of Investigations Vancouver Island, Director of Forensic Investigations and Director of Financial Integrity.  He retired from the Provincial government of BC in 2019.

While employed with the Province of BC he joined the Canadian Scottish Regiment (Princess Mary’s) (C Scot R).  The C Scot R is a primary reserve infantry unit based in Victoria BC. During this service he held several appointments in the unit.  In 2009/ 2010 he deployed to Afghanistan serving in the Intelligence cell in Kandahar City.  He retired from the unit 2013 at the rank of Captain.

At present he does contract work with a Forensic Accounting Firm based in Vancouver BC. 

He is involved as a volunteer with several organizations:

  • The Victoria International Whisky Festival (Treasurer)
  • The Companions of the Quaich (Treasurer)
  • The Commissioners Vancouver Island and Yukon (Board of Governors)
  • Lecturer on Anti Money Laundering

He lives in Victoria with his wife (Maggie), who retired from Nursing in 2015.  They have two adult children who both serve as Officers in the RCN.
