Harold served with the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) with tours in West Germany and Cyprus. He was a member of the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces who were awarded the1988 Nobel Peace Prize. Since leaving the military Harold worked as a corrections officer at the Victoria Youth Custody Centre and was later appointed to Veterans Review and Appeal Board by the Governor General of Canada. He also served on the Board of the Lodge at Broadmead, a veterans and community long term care facility.
Harold has been a veterans’ advocate since 1992. During this time he served at a national President of the Canadian Peacekeeping Veterans Association. His research and reports helped create benefits for post-World War Two veterans and their families. His proposals led to the creation of the Veterans Affairs – Canadian Forces Advisory Council and the VAC assistance line. His work also paved the way for the CAF and VAC peer support program OSSIS. Harold has assisted in the development of the UBC Psychology Department veterans transition work and developed a military to civilian cultural transition program Harold. Harald Co-authored and co-edited two books an presented expert testimony at Senate and parliamentary committee hearings.
Harold has received numerous awards for his work for veterans and their families. He was invested in as a Member of the Order of Military Merit in 1992 and his biography is listed in the Canadian who’s who since 2001 as a person who’s made a difference. He resides in Victoria, BC
